Dr. Deema Sihweil has been practicing Clinical Psychology for over a decade. She is of Middle Eastern origin and has lived in Europe and the United States where she studied and first established her career in psychology. Dr. Sihweil is licensed to practice in Washington D.C. and Dubai, and offers the full range of psychological services to children, adolescents and adults. She often travels and provides services in the wider Middle-East region and consults with multi-national corporations, schools, universities and medical facilities around the world. Dr. Sihweil is also a special education expert and provides comprehensive and forward-thinking consultations and assessments to students or individuals identified as having learning differences and requires special needs provisions to optimize their academic, professional and personal lives.
Dr. Sihweil strives to create a safe and confidential atmosphere and invites individuals and families to her private practice where they receive the unconditional respect and support as they explore whatever ails them without judgment or prejudice of any kind. She has extensive experience and interests in working with people from various cultures who suffer from a wide range of psychological disorders and problems in living. Her training in psychodynamic therapy affords her a broad framework of knowledge of human development and is skilled in helping people face the challenging effects that global living can have on mental health. Dr. Sihweil utilizes the most recent research based treatment methodologies in mental health practice, and works efficiently to help others resolve psychological distress and conflicts in people’s lives as quickly and practically as possible. By fostering emotional intelligence, Dr. Sihweil encourages people to identify the opportunities in difficult times and strives to help all develop everlasting change or resiliency for more abundant living and peace of mind.
Educational and Professional Background
Dr. Sihweil graduated from George Washington University’s Professional Psychology Program in Washington D.C., where she obtained clinical training in psychodynamic and complementary therapies. She completed her internship at The Catholic University of America’s Counseling Center and acquired supervised experience in cognitive behavioral and interpersonal therapies. Dr. Sihweil then pursued two years of post-doctoral clinical training at Georgetown University’s Counseling and Psychiatry Services, and at George Washington University’s Clinical Psychology Program and Community Mental Health Center Clinic. As a post-doctoral fellow, she managed the clinical services provided by the Center Clinic, as well as supervised and co-taught graduate students of the program. At the same time, Dr. Sihweil started her private psychology practice and provided psychological treatments to people of all ages in the international community of Washington D.C.
Prior to earning her Doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology, Dr. Sihweil obtained her Master’s Degree in Special Education at The American University. She taught at the Lab School of Washington D. C., an internationally recognized special education school for students with learning differences and trained special education teachers on the multi-sensory diagnostic-prescriptive teaching methods pioneered by world-renowned educators for children and adults with special needs. Meanwhile, Dr. Sihweil progressed in her psychology education and training and continued to consult with students with learning differences from area schools and universities in Washington, D.C. while establishing her career in clinical psychology.
Dr. Sihweil moved to the Middle East in 2007 and pursued her interests in working on an international level. She joined The Human Relations Institute and Clinics where she served as the Director of Clinical Services. She supervised all mental health professionals at the center while maintaining a full case load of private clients. Dr. Sihweil then decided to expand on her career and develop her private psychology practice. She currently serves as the Clinical Director of the Carbone Clinic and The Psychology Center.
